Church denomination convention watch: Reformed Church in America

Ah, tis the season for church conventions. The Reformed Church in America’s General Synod ends tonight. A little review.

I rather like this resolution presented and adopted (R-3) by the Reformed Church in America General Synod 2006,

These have loved Christ and fed his sheep. They have devoted themselves to spreading the Word and equipping the saints for the work of ministry.

Their contribution to a needy world is rich beyond measure; their record is on high.

The Reformed Church in America, with admiration, deep affection, and overflowing thanks to God, celebrates their lifelong service.

Thirty-nine names follow. It doesn’t say if they are all ministers, or any. There is something terribly touching about a commendary resolution: regards made as an action of the widest voting body has a certain heft.

The faithful also set up a 24-7 prayer vigil for the synod.

Controversial minister (“Is he a universalist or not?”) Brian McLaren spoke to them.

On the other hand, not all is rosy.

The “Classis of California respectfully overtures General Synod to revoke our ‘full communion’ status with the United Church of Christ.” [Link.]

It was denied. No word yet on Overture 7, “Classis Not to Ordain or Install Practicing Homosexuals.”
