Hardly the biggest matter the Episcopalian’s General Convention has to resolve, but it is still heartening to see that the House of Delegates passed a resolution that would move the Episcopal Church towards open data standards. (Wikipedia article link.) That is, to use their own descriptor a way to “future proof” data by using known and standards. (The resolution leaves open proprietary standards.) Bishops, please pass it.
Or put this way, we can read a prayer book from the sixteenth century, but can’t read some electronic data from within our own lifetimes. And it is a bad bargain to have to go hat-in-hand to a proprietary format vendor when you do have to extract that data. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the European Union have figured this out; Microsoft had a hissy-fit.
