The Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship Revival conference begins next Thursday at Fourth Universalist Church, New York. Here’s a picture of 4th U.

Fourth Universalist Church, New York. Image by wallyg. Used under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 licenseI didn’t take this photo. “wallyg” did and thank you. I am using it because wallyg licensed its use under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license, outlined here. This is the least restrictive of the licenses, and means I can share the image, sell it, modify or adapt it, or incorporate it with other works in an anthology. Were it a text, I could translate it. All provided I recognize wallyg as the artist. Which I do. Other licenses reserve rights. If I released something under a “no commercial use” license, someone else could use it and I could still (in theory; I have no experience of this) sell the commercial rights to a publisher.

But I’m thinking here of more mundane opportunities for sharing. How many times have I heard a minister discover his or her sermon or article was “lifted” for use in some other church without so much a “thank you”? Most people want recognition not residuals. The wider use of liberal licenses can help share information in a respectful and orderly manner.
