I heart Gwen Ifill

I will not talk about nasty-mouthed DJs who seem to continually justify my satellite radio subscription and MP3 player. I suspect "garbage in, garbage out" applies to radio so I would rather build myself up on journalists who do the profession proud.

Gwen Ifill is the reason, even now more than Jim Lehrer whom I also respect, that I watch The News Hour on PBS and why I tune into Washington Week when I could easily find other activities. I find her thoughtful, trustworthy, almost serene -- a rare gift these days -- in her handling of the news and affairs. She interviews well, without drawing attention to herself or being manipulated by her guests or her own passions. Her recent appearance on The Colbert Report shows she has a sense of humor and -- by contrast to the comic nature of the show -- that she's respected among her peers.

As one who took a nasty swipe by what's-his-name, she responds by rising above it and defending the Rutgers athletes who were so miserably berated. I know who I want to emulate.
