I am disappointed by the stodgy, over-produced and old-fashioned video to promote the Unitarian Universalist Association’s Association Sunday. It felt like I was being sold something and I wasn’t buying it (in any meaning of the idiom.)
I think we should have spared the production and have gotten the rights to use this video by Clay Shirky — not about churches but the Internet — about love-based communities and gift economy.
Stunning, but be sure to watch it for at least five of its just-over-nine minutes or you’ll miss his point.
Hat tip: Pirates of the Unitarians (“How Perl Programmers Build Churches”)
24 7 Churches too… not just for Sundays.
That video is perfect. Thanks for posting it.
Umm, well, speaking as a former salesman, some of the most effective marketing material *is* stodgy and overproduced. I’m sold on the new UUA video largely based on the response of the young adults in our church — who loved it, and asked for copies. Having said that, I still want to see more liberal religious videobloggers who produce the antithesis of marketing material — raw, quirky, fun, and intelligent online religious videos.
I TOTALLY lost it when he started talking about A++ and C++ and ATT and Perl. Different planet, dude, sorry, can’t follow.
Except that who’s Clay Shirky? Me likey!!
