I found a new independent-Universalist blog recently, The Simple Light Cafe. My one regret is that the blogger writes infrequently, but writes in a meaningfully dense way that I suspect each post is worth three or four careful reviews.
The writer has a theology that James Relly would have recognized: quite a good think in my book. Be sure to read the entry, “Born Again (Not What You’ve Heard)” which is as good a takedown of the Evangelical process of being “born again” as I’ve seen. And quite correct.
Thanks for this noting this blog. It was a joy to read the post. It was consoling and given that most of us on UU blogs too prone to talk public policy rather than write anything consoling, it was very joyful indeed.
But, I couldn’t help wonder how such a post would square with abortion rights. Too talk of birth in the way The simple light cafe does here would seem to make any such right an awful thing.
Or am I a UU too stuck on public policy when I should just be thankful for a feeling of consolement?
The blog is very well designed. Regarding the “born again” issue, for me, the historical quests for the historical Jesus have made so difficult to discern which are the ipsissima verba Iesu (Jesus’ very words) and which are not, that I find increasingly difficult to make any theology out of the Gospel writings.
Perhaps only Paul is reliable about how early Christianity looked like. I recommend Phil Harland’s recent podcasts on Paul’s authentic letters, in philipharland.com/blog
