I’ve been to First Universalist Church in Providence a few times over the years, but never so long as over General Assembly, when the church hosted morning prayer and vespers, and the usual Sunday service with a special observance of Holy Communion.
Here are a mix of photos, taken after the services in the sanctuary, lounge and dining room, with a focus on interesing tidbits. You know I’m going to make something of that Universalist Comrades (men’s group) emblem.
“The Order of Universalist Comrades!” Superb! I had no idea; and what a “modern” logo–no Victorian curlicues, etc. Was this a general purpose men’s fellowship, or did it have any overtones of the Knights of Columbus and that sort of thing?
It didn’t last long.
From what I can tell it was a men’s club (there were independent Universalist men’s clubs; the Unitarians had them, too) with a mission-fundraising componant. I’ll write about them soon.
Seems one of the Comrades tasks was raising money to build a church in Washington, D.C. Wonder how that turned out. ;^)
