All Souls Miami set for UUA admission vote

So, I was reading through the Unitarian Universalist Association Board packet for the June meeting — as one does — and see that All Souls Miami is (alone) scheduled to be voted upon for admission to the UUA.

I’ve never never seen an application go this far and not be accepted, so I’ll offer my confident (if premature) congratulations. I welcome all new members to the UUA of course, but All Souls Miami is special to me because it’s Christian: the first Christian church admitted since Epiphany Church, Fenton, Michigan, joined many years ago and has since disbanded.

Emerging, "submerging" congregations, 2012

A couple of thoughts. Congregations failing to thrive aren’t failures; one never knows the impact of ministry, and without an attempt there can be no success. And it makes me happy that there’s a new work in Kinston, North Carolina, where there was a Universalist church as late (I think) as the 1990s.

Two small churches, using social media and tools

Small churches in the Unitarian Universalist Association are a bit off the recognition map; so, too, are the Christian churches. Combine these and, well, good luck. But I’ve noticed two that are using social tools well and deserve recognition.

  • First Universalist Church, Providence, has revamped its website and (here’s the point) has started advertizing on Facebook. (I don’t like Facebook, but it’s probably a wise move.) Friend them on Facebook and visit if you’re in town.
  • All Souls Miami, an emerging congregation (but more of an adapted one) in Florida can email or (here’s the point) text members and attendees worship reminders — helpful since they don’t meet every Sunday. I don’t recall another congregation doing this.

They’re on to something:

Visitors might note that traditionally the name “All Souls” has applied mostly to Unitarian churches or churches of dissent. While we may be “spiritual cousins” of Christian Unitarians and other liberal churches in liberal denominations, and while we remain appreciative of denominational families, All Souls Miami remains independent and unaffiliated.

The worship has a traditional form. They also meet in rented space, about twice a month. The minister, Kenneth Claus, is experienced with seminary training (Union) and a tentmaker. Interesting.
